Autism is not as uncommon as once thought. In fact, some studies suggest that autism rates are now 1 in 68 children – perhaps because of earlier intervention and the fact that advanced diagnostic procedures are being administered at a younger age. However, even though Autism is more prevalent than once thought, Autistic children can still feel very much isolated and alone simply because they behave differently than other children.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired verbal and non-verbal communication and restricted (often repetitive) behavior that leads to a limited ability to function easily in social interactions. Although Autistic children are often very bright – if not brilliant in some cases (think of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) – the difficulty they have interacting with other children creates a significant gap in their social development.
Capital Keys Autism Families, Inc. is a California-based nonprofit organization that has created a way to offer Autism supporters an opportunity to surprise an Autistic child with a gift. Founded by Anthony Tinervia Jr., an Autistic adult who often felt isolated and alone growing up, we have launched a membership club whereby members can submit an Autistic child’s name to be entered in a weekly drawing for a gift to be mailed to them. Our overall goal is to bring a smile to the faces of Autistic children and to let them know that they are not alone – that someone cares.
There are benefits to supporters as well! Those who donate will have a good odds of winning a gift. Monthly donations help Autism families with fun drawings on Facebook Live, Instant Wins, Raffles and more!
